The Woodpecker: JUN 21 - JUL 21

The Woodpecker: JUN 21 - JUL 21

Animals hold highly sacred symbolism to all Native American cultures, and are honored as key aspects to many legends, rituals, and traditions. A common practice among many Native American civilizations is the assignment of an animal totem, or spirit animal, at birth. The animal is chosen according to the time of year in which a person is born, and is accompanied by related characteristics and strengths intended as a symbolic and spiritual guide for one's life.

These posters, which I created in Adobe Illustrator, are part of an ongoing series featuring the 12 animal totems of the Native American equivalent of a zodiac calendar. My illustrations are inspired by both traditional and contemporary Native American art (especially the work of artist John Nieto), which is often characterized by bright, vibrant colors and bold shapes. A select few of their corresponding traits are carefully woven into the illustrations using various filter effects to provide the poster with a higher sense of purpose.
